The Revolving Boat

Ramesh, the oarsman of Banaras(India) was from a lower class family. He earned money by giving rowing-boat ride to tourists on Ganga River’s pier and from that money he used to fulfil needs and expenditures of his family.

In every evening his son, named Neeraj, also came to help him.

One evening, Neeraj asked his father-There is importance of happiness in life but what’s the importance of sorrow? Why sorrow comes? Hopefully! If sorrow doesn’t come then how wonderful our life must be; sorrow has made our life unsuccessful and tough.

Ramesh said to Neeraj- Come; let’s go for rowing in Ganga River.

Neeraj again repeated his words- Father; if life has only happiness then life must be very savoury and successful.

Ramesh told his son to sit on boat.

Neeraj thought that his father was not giving importance to his words, so he again repeated the same.

Ramesh said- Come and sit, we will talk during rowing.

By sitting in boat, Ramesh started rowing with only one oars; by doing this instead of moving forward, boat started revolving in its own place.

Neeraj asked with confused expressions- Father, if you keep doing like this then instead of rowing forward, we will revolve round and round only.

Ramesh smiled and answered- you are sensible. Doing this by me, maybe you have got the answer of your question that what’s the importance of sorrow in life!

Neeraj was seeing his father with goofy expressions.

Ramesh explained- Dear son, life is like a rowing-boat and both oars are like happiness and sorrow. If there remains only happiness in life then life will revolve round and round only; will not move forward and will become savour less. Both oars are important to move a rowing-boat forward, in the same way to move life successfully, happiness and sorrow both are important otherwise life will not be successful and will become tasteless.

Dear friends, We always pray for happiness, no one wants sorrow but then also sorrow comes. Sorrow doesn’t come to make our life unsuccessful but it comes to teach us something new so that we could learn from it. For successful moving life, both happiness and sorrow are important. Thank You.
