Extravagance of a Matchstick

Madan Mohan Malviya (founder of Kashi Hindu University) by going to different places was collecting money for establishment of Kashi Hindu University.

One day, he went to a rich businessman’s house with many expectations; he had heard a lot about his generosity.

Businessman welcomed Malviya with much respect and made him to sit.

It was evening time, businessman told his son to burn the candles.

His son while burning one candle, lighted one matchstick; to burn second candle, lighted second matchstick; in the same way to burn third candle, he lighted third matchstick.

When son was burning fourth matchstick to burn fourth candle then his father came nearby and scolded him for wasting so many matchsticks to burn each candle. He ordered- Why don’t you burn rest of the candles by one burned candle!

It seemed weird to Malviya. He thought - This businessman got angry by wasting of a matchstick then what will he donate for University?

After the few moments, businessman asked the reason for the arrival of Malviya.

Malviya told with hesitation that he had come with aim of collecting money for establishment of a huge University.

By listening this, businessman appreciated him for this work; then he donated Twenty five thousand bucks to Malviya and requested him to stay that night.

Next morning, when Malviya began to depart then he asked businessman- Having wealth and prosperity, why did you upbraid your son last evening for a small matchstick? That time I thought, you would be miser but you are really worthy and liberal.

Businessman smilingly answered- Malviya ji, Miser is that who cuts own needs after having many facilities. Frugal is that who spends according to own needs and prodigal spends money uselessly. My son was burning matchsticks prodigally, but you are working for the welfare of society that’s why the donation given to you is useful.

In this way, businessman defined the perfect definition of miser, frugal and prodigal.

Dear friends, Prosperity doesn’t mean to spend money uselessly. Neither be a miser nor a prodigal, only be a frugal. If we refrain from extravagance and utilize the wasted money in some good works then only our country-society-family will progress. Thank You.
